The Civilian War Memorial is also known for its architectural beauty. This monument was built by the best architects of the time. The monument resembles chopsticks . There are four such chopsticks and each of them are 67meters high. Each of the four chopsticks, as it is affectionately called, resembles four ethnic groups of Singapore. These are the Malays, Chinese, Indians, and other groups.
The history which led to the making of the Civilian War Memorial is also unique. Thousands of Chinese people were killed during the Sook Ching Massacre. The Chinese people were killed by the Japanese soldiers who were trying to occupy Singapore during that time. This affected the young Chinese people during that time and a lot of people took part in the Army military police. In the year 1962, many years after the massacre, remains of the civilian victims were unearthed in places like Siglap Changi, Timah and Bukit.
After the discovery of this remains, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to create a memorial. In March, 1963, Lee Kuan Yew, the Prime Minister of Singapore, donated a plot of land near the Beach Road and it was decided that the memorial should be built here. On April 1966, the construction of the memorial was started and was completed in January 1967. It was finally opened for the public in February, 1967.
